The one and only Funklordz, Chromeo have revealed their new banger, “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” today. The track finds the duo returning to their dancefloor roots with an infectious bassline that harkens back to the disco-meets-electrofunk sound of Fancy Footwork, the album that catapulted Chromeo onto the worldwide stage. That doesn’t mean that they haven’t grown, though. Vocally, the duo sounds fresher and more confident than ever as Dave 1 waxes about the perks of mature, committed relationships: “let’s talk about loyalty instead of lawyer fees.” Whereas Chromeo is usually known for succinct song structure, here, the duo lets loose and “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” segues into an extended, explosive instrumental section, highlighting their current collaboration with legendary producer Morgan Geist on mixing duties.
In celebration of the new music, the band will embark on the FUNK YOURSELF tour this fall, their first headline run in over four years. The dates come on the heels of Chromeo’s triumphant fifth appearance at Coachella, where they blew minds with an all-new stage setup—including four custom chrome modular synth towers—designed with longtime collaborator and contemporary artist Freeka Tet (Aphex Twin, Childish Gambino, YSL).
The tour will bring them to New York’s Brooklyn Steel, two nights at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall, Austin City Limits and Portola festivals, a massive co-headline Los Angeles play with Purple Disco Machine and more. Chicago rapper Ric Wilson (for whom Chromeo just produced the EP CLUSTERFUNK with Dave 1’s brother A-Trak), identical twin DJs Coco & Breezy and rising downtown New York star May Rio will support on select dates. See below for full routing.
“(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” concludes a cohesive trilogy of singles to be followed by festival-ready remixes this summer and a very special announcement in the fall. “Replacements” was hailed as “a nod back to the heyday of indie sleaze,” that is “sure to make you dance” by Consequence and featured the era-defining artist La Roux, who made a surprise appearance during Chromeo’s Coachella sets to debut the track. “Words With You,” which Stereogum calls their “favorite thing the Canadian synth-funk duo has ever done,” is currently featured in an international Taco Bell television ad campaign.
Montreal natives and high school best friends Dave 1 and P-Thugg rose to prominence with their seminal 2007 release, Fancy Footwork, heralding the dawn of the ’80s electro-funk revival; then in 2014, garnered further mainstream appeal with their chart-topping album, White Women, and 2018’s Grammy-nominated, Head Over Heels. Chromeo’s five LPs have been hailed as modern funk masterworks, and they have toured the world over for two decades.
