Rising New York City alternative rock band, Quarters of Change have released their new single, “What I Wanted” today via Elektra. The track is accompanied by a video, produced by the band themselves and directed by frequent collaborator Amyas Ryan. It notably marks the first new release from Quarters of Change since their acclaimed 2022 LP Into The Rift (Deluxe), and sets the stage for more new music to come later this year. Watch the video now below.
Written during a creative pilgrimage to Woodstock, NY, “What I Wanted” hinges on the inimitable interplay between the band members who wrote and recorded the song together in the same room. The track melts into shoegaze distortion as warm vocals hover above a steady beat. It eventually climaxes in a crash of guitar awash in fuzz and resounding vocals. Ultimately, the single illustrates their deft balance of rich dynamics with moments of calm and catharsis.
Regarding the song, lead vocalist Ben Roter shares, “We definitely brought some grunge to it, but also tapped into the swag of the seventies. It’s inspired by a relationship to a degree. You think you know what you want, but you get it and you don’t want it anymore. Finally, you realize you didn’t know what you wanted in the first place. I feel like everyone has felt that at one time or another.”
Next up, the band will embark on The Quarters of Change Show US tour. The 20-city trek will kick off on September 14 in Virginia Beach, VA, and wrap on December 9 with the band’s largest hometown show to date at New York City’s famed Webster Hall. Never Ending Fall, Rebounder, and Balu Brigada will provide support. Tickets for the The Quarters of Change Show are on sale now.
A limited edition, first pressing vinyl of the band’s debut album Into The Rift will be available exclusively at the merch table on tour. The vinyl is available for pre-order now.
