NYC-based artist, Logan Avidan has released her new single, “Left My Heart”, the first taste of what to expect on her upcoming debut solo album, Hot And Bothered. The new track is stacked with catchy melodies and sticky lyrics — an authentic mashup of what Avidan says is “girl rock and pop music.”
“‘Left My Heart’ is about not putting limits on yourself,” Logan explains, “No matter what situation you are in in your life, the only way to make a change or achieve something will come from taking risks and leaving your comfort zone. Diving into all possibilities. Everyone seems to be concerned about the ‘right’ timing, the ‘right’ way, the ‘right’ thing to do. Letting go of these worries and going all in will make you feel the most free. It’s about leaving that heavy weight behind and taking that risk.”
The chorus may be all upside: “To make a dream reality is a dream.” But her delivery, the verse lyrics, the wonderful melancholy of it all – she didn’t get there by accident, and she didn’t get there the easy way. She’s done her forebears proud, with a track that heralds the arrival of a singer-songwriter who asks her fans to put themselves out there. But the rewards are many – and judging by this song, she’ll gladly leap first.
The song idea was sparked while she was on a plane, recording a voice memo on her phone to keep the idea from escaping her mid-flight (the musician’s natural instinct at work). She touched down, immediately sang it to co-writer and producer John Eatherly, who banged out a chord progression on guitar. The two recorded 90% of it in Avidan’s apartment, then headed over to Sisserou Studios in Dumbo, Brooklyn to track the drums and finalize the song. Eatherly’s no stranger to taking pop gems over the finish line. He’s handled drums on tracks for San Francisco dream-poppers Cults and Caroline Polachek’s Chairlift, guitar for Eleanor Friedberger’s (Fiery Furnaces) solo record, is chief songwriter for swaggering power pop foursome Public Access T.V, and he’s a current member of indie garage rock outfit, Be Your Own Pet. Definitely not a bad guy to have in your corner.
In terms of tastes, Avidan’s run far and wide and it shows. Her sound is a refreshing mix of artists like Courtney Love, Mazzy Star, Lana del Rey, SZA, and Fiona Apple — a unique and powerful combination of music’s most daring women. She channels the past and present, taking simple turns of phrase and injecting something so much more into them: “I left my heart by the river / It wasn’t the cold / That made me shiver.”
