Singer-songwriter, Gatlin has released two new tracks – an original single “Too Much Woman,” and a cover of Hoobastank‘s 2003 hit “The Reason.” Originally recorded when Gatlin was writing her I Sleep Fine Now EP, she calls the double single release “two sides of a love coin.”
Sensual and compelling, “Too Much Woman” gets into the nitty-gritty of an uneven partnership. Opening boldly with powerful cymbals and fuzzed out guitars, Gatlin is fearless in airing her grievances as she sings, “I’m not your mother, I’m your lover, and you need better friends.” As the slick groove of the verses blooms into a celestial chorus, Gatlin’s airy vocals take center stage, reminiscent of Stevie Nicks.
Gatlin says of the inspiration for “Too Much Woman”, “‘Too Much Woman’ was written, honestly, in an apathetic state about a guy I was dating. I was actively jealous of some of the queer relationships I was surrounded by, and felt spent by the stereotypical straight relationship I was in. It’s a song that covers the duality of women; strong/angry in the production for most of the song but ending with a light, gentle, beautiful final chorus.”
Gatlin brings her perspective for an intimate and enthralling cover of Hoobastank’s “The Reason.” Switching gritty guitars and thrashing percussion for haunting background vocals and muted acoustics, Gatlin taps into a vast well of yearning and desperation with her wistful, ethereal sonic spin. Gatlin’s version delves deep into the emotional ethos of “The Reason,” exploring the bittersweet feeling of changing for the better after it’s already too late. “I used to sing Hoobastank’s ‘The Reason’ in my bedroom as a kid, pretending my life was a movie and fake crying with all the melodrama this eight year old could muster,” Gatlin says about her relationship with the song. “The emotions of my childhood self served as the inspiration to make my own dramatic indie version.”
The double single release follows Gatlin’s Fall 2023 headlining North American tour and her I Sleep Fine Now EP. Crafted around the concept of the five stages of grief, I Sleep Fine Now weaves a rich narrative touching on themes of loss, transition, and hope through a luxurious amalgamation of indie-pop melodies and synth driven ballads, led by the scathingly ironic focus single “Really Funny.”
Arriving on the scene in 2020 with her EP Sugarcoated, Gatlin made an impression on listeners with her profound lyricism. Gatlin thrives on telling intricate stories born of small moments, and making the ordinary seem grand. I Sleep Fine Now follows a string of successful releases, most recently the EP To Remind Me of Home, which featured the hit single “What If I Love You,” helping Gatlin achieve a milestone of 2 million monthly listeners.
