Pop powerhouse artist and GRAMMY® Award-nominated Diamond-certified songwriter Bonnie McKee has returned with her new single, “Jenny’s Got A Boyfriend” out now. Watch the accompanying video now below.
On the new song, Bonnie shares, “‘Jenny’s Got A Boyfriend’ was inspired by a friend’s boyfriend who was a terrible flirt. He was always giving me and all the other girls the wrong idea! I always wanted to write a song with a person’s name in the title, and when I was listening to some classics, I rediscovered ‘Jesse’s Girl’ and realized I was having the same experience- but I’d never heard the angle of lusting after someone else’s partner through the female lens. ‘JGABF’ is kind of like ‘Jolene’ in reverse, if Dolly’s man were a flirtatious playboy (which maybe he was!)”
“Jenny’s Got A Boyfriend” finds Bonnie at her most iconic. Her inimitable pen proves as sharp as ever when lusting for a friend’s impossibly handsome, yet gut-wrenchingly flirty man. Meanwhile, her voice brims with confidence and an irresistible playfulness.
At the same time, she hopped behind the camera to direct the accompanying visual (in addition to starring in, casting, and producing it!). Unabashedly wearing a Boogie Nights influence on its sleeve, the video brings the lyrics to life in a seventies-style roller rink where Bonnie doesn’t hide her desires for Jenny’s boyfriend. From the slick roller-skating choreography to the eye-catching aesthetic, it immediately captivates.
On creating the video, Bonnie explains, “I co directed the video with my long time collaborator David Richardson (Bombastic, Stars In Your Heart). It’s very difficult to direct when you’re also the main character, and David and I share a love of throwback special effects and comedic storytelling, so I knew he would deliver. It was important to me to highlight the fact that this imagined romance with another woman’s boyfriend was only a fantasy and not something I would actually act on, so we threw in some high-camp light up nether regions to keep the storyline light and playful on a subject that might land me in ‘homewrecker’ territory. Don’t worry- no boyfriends were stolen in the making of this song!”
The track will be featured on Bonnie’s highly anticipated album, Hot City. The record has been a long time coming – as legend has it, she originally cut the album under a previous major label deal. For years, audiences salivated for its release after digging up leaked tracks. When Bonnie discovered a massive fan forum pleading for the record to see the light of day, she decided to re-record it herself.
Bonnie initially paved the way for the LP with “SLAY,” “Hot City,” and “Don’t Get Mad Get Famous,” tallying millions of streams and earning acclaim from The FADER, Rolling Stone, and more.
