It seems like every month of 2017, a new “album of the year” dropped. Whether it was Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. that changed your life or if it was a smaller, unsigned artist like Virginia post-hardcore band pulses. that was pumping through your speakers throughout the majority of the year, there’s no denying that 2017 was a great year for music.
Enter Shikari have always been unafraid to speak their minds. The band are no strangers to writing about relevant issues – be it political or personal – but their new album, The Spark finds them exploring uncharted territory both musically and emotionally, making for quite possibly their strongest release to date. Easily their most melodic album, The Spark gives listeners some light in the dark, a sense of hope and community in tough times while simultaneously serving as a sort of therapy for frontman Rou Reynolds and documenting Enter Shikari’s journey into a new sound. This combination makes for an emotional, thought provoking journey from beginning to end.
Earlier this week, I read an article which insinuated that although massive overseas, Enter Shikari are still struggling to find an audience in the states. But even before their headlining show in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their landmark album, Take to the Skies took place in Denver, I knew this wasn’t true. Nearly two years after their last performance in Colorado, the band still drew a large crowd and this was thanks in part to their insanely devoted fans.
2016 was one hell of a year of 10-year anniversary tours for the Myspace-era emo kid in all of us. With extensive anniversary tours from bands like Underoath, Hawthorne Heights, Boys Like Girls, Cute Is What We Aim For and countless others, we’ve all relived our glory days in one way or another this year (sans embarrassing haircuts, I’m sure) which begs the question – what does 2017 hold?
Enter Shikari have been touring relentlessly since the release of their newest album, The Mindsweep in 2015, and will be hitting the road for a second run of North American tour dates throughout April and May. We caught up with frontman Rou Reynolds about Enter Shikari’s thirteen years as a band, their intense live performances, playing smaller club shows and touring through the U.S. during election time.
