Review by Dillon Crader
Denver’s own Wild Trees are debuting their first full-length record, Overshadowed, which will be giving them a name of their own with this thrilling release. The first instinct I had on covering a local artist, personally, was that it was going to be boring and bland. I was proven wrong within the first listen of Overshadowed.
I would first like to mention that this album is unlike anything else in the Denver music scene. Overshadowed is full of angst, similar to bands like Title Fight, but also calming and beautiful. This combination of sound that Wild Trees have put together in Overshadowed is one of a kind, making me excited to be part of the local music scene here in Colorado.
One of the first tracks that really struck me during the first listen through of Overshadowed was “Exhale”. Vocalist/guitarist Keenan Goodwine’s vocals are soft and beautiful sounding during the verses with incredible sounding harmonies to back them up, followed by Jared Barnes’ slamming vocals in the chorus that gives the song a perfect balance between light and dark.
The guitar leads and tone used in Overshadowed are also something that got me very into this album. Songs like “Stain” and “Disregard” are two of my personal favorites, focusing specifically on guitar. The only thing I would like to mention is that I felt that there were a lot of songs that used a lot of the same harmonies, which felt a little bit repetitive and made some tracks sound similar to each other. That being said, I think this is a part of the sound that Wild Trees has formulated through this release and something that should not be judged too harshly.
Overall, Wild Trees have created a jaw dropping release. Being their first full-length release, I am excited to see what is in store for Wild Trees and to see what else they are capable of. I definitely stand by it when I say that this is one of my favorite releases of the year. I urge everyone to go and give Overshadowed a listen.
In Support of Overshadowed, you can catch Wild Trees with co-headliners Overslept and support from other locals Evinair and Anterroir on December 10th at the Marquis Theater in Denver.
