In their ten years as a band, Paris pop-punk/alternative rock quintet, Back On Earth has accomplished quite a bit, especially considering that five of those years have been on hiatus. In their first four years as a band, the group released three EPs, working with Beau Burchell (Saosin), Bertrand Poncet (Chunk! No Captain Chunk!) and Martin Beusker (Kensington), before deciding to take a break in 2014. Last year, when they made their comeback, it was with their stellar new single, “Youth”, five years of growth behind them and a fresh new outlook on their music and the music scene as a whole.
Now, Back On Earth seem to be here to stay, with their new track, “Save Me” out now, and plans to continue releasing stand-alone singles for the foreseeable future. With a focus on making the most out of each song, the pop-punk world needs a band like Back On Earth, and they’re here to answer the call. Read what the band had to say about their new music and plans for 2020 below.
Can you tell us a little bit about Back On Earth for anyone who might not be familiar?
Hi everyone! We are Back On Earth, a Paris based alternative rock/pop-punk band that was created in 2010. We have proven ourselves within the Parisian pop-punk scene with 3 EPs. Our tracks have been produced by Beau Burchell (Saosin), Bertrand Poncet (Chunk! No Captain Chunk!) and Martin Beusker (Kensington). We also played in France and abroad with American bands such as The Almost, Motion City Soundtrack, The Wonder Years, Transit… The band consists of Clément on vocals, Adrien and Jean-Baptiste on guitars, Gianni on drums and Mehdi on bass.
Last year, you guys returned after a five year hiatus with your new single, “Youth”. How does it feel to be back together after so many years apart?
It feels refreshing, the music scene has changed in a lot of ways since we first started and we did too. Since we got back together, we are working in a different way, compared to how we did back then, in a positive way. We gather every skills that each member has to offer in order to keep evolving as a band, not only when it comes to music, but also, in arts, digital communications, etc.
We feel stronger than we did when we started the band. The 5 of us are no longer the under-20 kids anymore.
Five years is a pretty large gap and I’m sure you all grew and changed a lot over that time. What do you feel you took away from your time apart from the band and what do you hope it’ll bring to future new music?
As I was saying earlier, we keep pushing the band to the next level not only musically but also with the artworks and the way we promote the songs. Also, some of us have been evolving in projects with a more pop sound than the old Back On Earth tracks. It helped us write songs that are more anchored to the current music scene, adding a “poppier” sound to it.
The hiatus aside, Back On Earth has been a band for over ten years – how do you feel the music scene has changed since you first started playing together and how has it affected you?
It certainly has changed, but it was not a drastic change, we’ve seen it evolved little by little, with so many young bands emerging at the same time. I remember when we first started, a lot of young bands didn’t know or didn’t have the resources to produce a song and making it sound professional, and as a band that was the only way to stand out. Now a lot of bands record and do the mix and mastering themselves and it sounds great.Over the past 10 years, it’s become really easier to learn how these things work.
I’d love to talk about your single, “Youth.” It’s the first song you released after your hiatus, so what made it a special one to you? Why did you want it to be the first song that fans would hear upon your return?
It is a special one to us because that’s the first one we worked on when we got back together last June and we all fell for it. Yŏuth represents the balance between old Back On Earth songs and new ones. It still has that catchy and uplifting feel to it, but with a more pop sound , which is unique to our newer compositions. We thought that it was the best way to introduce the fans to the new area.
What would you like listeners to take away from “Youth”?
We would like the listeners to take away the message behind the song and the comfort feeling of hope coming from the chorus. No matter the struggles you’ve been facing and the scars you’ve been hiding, everything will get better and if someone’s reaching out for you don’t push him away.
Do you have any big goals in mind for new music?
We’ve thought about it and made the decision that we won’t put out any EP or any album, we’d rather release a song and its alternative version every couple months. This way we feel like we can take the best out of every single song.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for having us on this interview! We want to thank the fans for their support since 2010, and hopefully we’ll get the chance to take the stage more often and meet every single one of you!
Thanks again for your time!
