Magical UK supergroup, The Darkness will be taking over Summit Music Hall in Denver, CO on October 16th, 2015, as part of the wild North American leg of their Blast of Our Kind Tour. Having just released their new album, Last of Our Kind in June, The Darkness is back and crazier than ever since their last show in Denver over two years ago in 2013.

In anticipation for the upcoming show, we had the chance to chat with bassist Frankie Poullain about Last of Our Kind, the recent changes to the band’s lineup, and what crazy antics fans should expect on the upcoming tour dates. Read the entire interview below.
The Prelude Press: I want to start by talking about your new album, Last Of Our Kind. Can you tell us a little bit about the story behind the album?
Frankie Poullain: Personal and professional relationships had to be severed, it was sad. And frustrating. Management, record companies and our drummer Ed Graham. Not to mention upheavals in personal life (mind your own business!).
It’s not surprising therefore that the album is us escaping into the past. Well, we always did that to be honest, but I suppose this album is our most purely escapist.
It’s our warmest, gooey-ist, bloodiest, muddiest, loveliest album.
Now that it has been out for a few months, how excited are you to get out on the road in the US to play these new songs?
We now have the one and only Rufus Taylor on drums. It’s joyful playing with him and feeding off his youth, vim and unsullied beauty. He’s a natural blonde, what more could you want?
We are surfing a wave of pure unadulterated positivity, and when that happens we are sure to blow your little cotton socks off.
How do you feel that The Darkness has grown or changed since the release of Hot Cakes back in 2012?
We are more intense, impassioned, in tune and in accord with who we are as people and as a band. Not in a yoga way though … we’re here to caress butt and gaze poetically at the small of a woman’s back. Same old same old!
Now I know for the album’s title track, you had quite a few of your fans provide guest vocals and included them in the music video as well. How did that idea come about? Was there a specific reason you chose to feature them on “Last Of Our Kind”?
Yes, because we knew the fans would like to see that and they deserve that. Why can’t everyone be as nice as us? Is that asking too much?
As of lately, a lot of bands seem to be breaking down the barriers between them and their fans, from including them in music videos and songs to doing things like giveaways and secret intimate shows. Why do you think it’s important for artists to have that sort of personal connection with their listeners?
So they carry on liking you of course! Blow smoke up their ass and they’re yours forever. Simple.
Your music videos are always so much fun to watch and I loved the animation in the “Barbarian” video. It fits the song perfectly! Where did the idea to have an animated video come about?
My idea. Thanks! Just kidding, I wanted to see how long I could keep the obnoxious thing going for, please forgive me. Haven’t had a coffee yet …
It’s a great video, it really is – thanks, kudos and love for the mischief of Phil Robertson and the art of Nick Roche.
I had the chance to catch you guys a few years back when you came through Denver, and your live shows are always insane! What do you hope to bring to your upcoming US tour dates? Can fans expect anything new to go along with the new album?
More insanity. Raw rock ‘n roll served up with a dollop of mayonnaise, the mayonnaise of the gods no less. Ginger, chilli, anchovies, aubergine – anything that fucks with your tongue and fizzes in your guts, we will endeavor to give you the aural equivalent.
And that’s a promise.
What would you like fans to be able to take away from your live performances?
A tingle between the legs and a throb in the heart.
I know you’ve mentioned in past interviews that you don’t plan out or contrive things, but is there anything that you’d like to be able to try to do on this upcoming string of tour dates or even with future releases, whether it’s with your fans, you music or your live performances?
Yes, we are offering a Q&Aand soundcheck upgrade to fans. Come on down to venue at 4pm. You can ask us anything. I enjoy philosophy, Jus is the History buff.
