2017 has already been a busy year for Denver pop-rock band VYNYL and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. Following their previously released tracks, “Blue Dreams” and “Reaction,” we are excited to share the band’s newest single, “Oh You,” which gives listeners a taste of the more mellow side of VYNYL. The love song is a slight sonic shift from their usual upbeat sound and a welcome change of pace.
“Oh You” also comes on the heels of the band’s exciting announcement that they will be playing two festivals in one day later this summer. On August 12th, you can catch VYNYL playing the local stage at Channel 93.3’s Big Gig before later hitting The Prelude Press stage at the locals only Engage Music Festival at Summit Music Hall. With big plans for the rest of the year, this certainly won’t be the last time you hear from VYNYL.
Listen to “Oh You” and read what the band had to say about upcoming new music and more below!

The Prelude Press: Your new single follows your two previously released songs, “Blue Dreams” and “Reaction.” Each track has a very different vibe, so what did you want to accomplish with “Oh You”?
Brian Kotal [drums]: When “Oh You” was written, the four of us were all in a similar place emotionally. Tyler and Andrew showed me the basic idea they had programmed weeks before at a rehearsal one night. It came up after we had been talking about our love for more melancholy late 80s new wave, and we all wanted to construct something that captured that vibe. We wanted to create something that took the collective group emotional dynamic, and put it into a tangible form. “Oh You” was really the first song I was given percussive liberties with, and thus was the first song we wrote together as a group. I think it most accurately represents the cooperative, and will likely be a sonic precursor of things to come from VYNYL.
Lyrically, what inspired this track?
Andrew Ceronio [bass]: The songs lyrics are inspired by the moment you look at your significant other and you think to yourself how truly lucky you are. It is a moment we all can relate too and feel comforted by, It’s a simple song for a truly complex emotion but it is a subject we wanted to tackle head on as we felt we had something to say. Often the subject of love is tackled in a conventional manner and that is not what we wanted for this track, We wanted its quirks and oddities to shine through and hopefully we achieved that.
I know that there’s a bit of a meaning behind the artwork for the single as well. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
Nikkolus Banos [guitar, backing vocals]: When we were conceptualizing the idea we knew we wanted it to be cute and have kissing or cuddling to match the tone of the track. We wanted to make a cover that was significantly brighter than our previous two (Reaction & Blue Dreams) just to create contrast. A while ago one of our fans did “Blue Dreams” inspired makeup on Instagram so we decided to add that to the aesthetic and we found our own dual meaning to it. Not only did it reinforce the “blue thing” that we do, but it’s also our way of trying to raise awareness for PAH (Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: a lung and heart disease). Blue lipstick is basically to PAH as pink is to breast cancer. It is a symbol for one’s struggle to breathe. My mom and I both have PAH. Lastly we decided to choose two girls to be on the cover to reinforce our support of the LGBTQ community and equal love. Love doesn’t have to be gender specific! For more info regarding PAH go here!

On top of this new song, you guys also just found out that you’ll be playing the locals stage at Big Gig and The Prelude Press stage at Engage Music Festival the same day! Both of these shows are very different from one another but very exciting. What are you looking forward to the most?
Tyler Whiteley [vocals, guitar, keys]: Being able to play two very diverse and amazing crowds is going to be a total blast! With Engage, I’m looking forward to connecting with all our friends from all over the state, as well as the other bands in the Denver scene! The energy will be fire. I’ve never played two sets in one day, so it’s sure to be a madhouse. But opening up Big Gig, playing at Fiddlers green has been something I’ve wanted to do since I came to Denver!
With all of this exciting news, I know you’ve also been talking about releasing an EP this year. When can fans expect to hear some more new music from VYNYL?
Tyler: We are in the process of writing tons of music. We honestly have more than we know what do with at this point! We initially planned on releasing an EP (Blue Dreams EP), but when we got the masters back we felt that we could do a better job debuting a more visual and deliberate sound. While some of the songs we play, like Downtown Girls and Two in the Morning are a blast to dance your ass off to, we have some incredible new sounds on the horizon. And we can’t wait to share them with you!
