Kevin Devine has released his new song, “Kuala Lumpur” from Devinyl Splits No. 7, his split with Craig Finn & The Uptown Controllers, set to be released on March 30th on Bad Timing Records.
Alongside the song premiere, Billboard spoke to Kevin Devine about the new series. Devine said of the song, “‘Kuala Lumpur’ was a bit more imagistic and a bit more of a proper projection and fantasy — a daydream where someone get a little further than they wanted to in their head.”
Pre-orders for the split are available now for Devinyl Splits No. 7, and for the Local Line Subscription, a subscription for all six splits in the Devinyl Splits Series Vol II.
This split comes off of Kevin Devine’s Devinyl Split Series Vol. II. Kevin Devine is an independent singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, NY. He plays alone, with his Goddamn Band, and as a member of Bad Books.
The first run of his Devinyl Splits, released between February 2015 and March 2016, consisted of six split 7” singles, each featuring Devine and a different partner. The series, released by Bad Timing Records and Devinyl Records, returns in 2018 for another run.
For each installment of Devinyl Splits Vol. 1, Devine and his partner chose a theme. No. 1 saw Devine and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws covering each other’s bands; No. 2 saw Devine and Perfect Pussy’s Meredith Graves releasing new solo songs; No. 3 featured Devine and Tigers Jaw covering The Cure; No. 4 marked the first new full-band song from Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band in over a year, with Cymbals Eat Guitars revealing a raucous new track of their own; No. 5 consisted of two beautiful acoustic tracks from Devine and Owen; and No. 6 had Devine and Brand New’s Jesse Lacey covering R.E.M.
Devinyl Splits Vol. 2 will be released in the form of six 7” split singles over the course of 2018 and into 2019. The first two partners were announced as Craig Finn & The Uptown Controllers (Devinyl Splits No. 7) and Petal (Devinyl Splits No. 8). Fans can look forward to more thoughtfully-selected themes and exciting pairings with artists who Devine has toured with, admires, and who push the envelope lyrically and musically.
Craig Finn is the frontman for americana indie rock band The Hold Steady. His latest solo record We All Want The Same Things was released in 2017. The album explores themes of love and partnership in the modern world. Expressed via Finn’s signature character studies, black humor, and smartly arranged rock ‘n’ roll, the album made a critical splash. Now he teams up with backing band The Uptown Controllers to release a new song for the Devinyl Splits Series.
