Dublin-based vocalist-producer and multi-instrumentalist EDEN, born Jonathon Ng, releases a new song, “909,” today via Astralwerks, for purchase and streaming from all digital partners. As with all of his music, “909” was recorded and produced by EDEN at his home studio in Dublin, Ireland.
Also being released today is a video for “909,” directed by EDEN’s frequent collaborators Zhang + Knight, who also directed EDEN’s videos for “gold” and “crash.” Shot in Thailand, the “909” video features stunning views of the forest and coastline and a Thai woman connecting with her past. The imagery is powerfully rooted in the mysticism of the natural world and perfectly accentuates the lush ambience of the track. Watch the video now below and listen to it HERE.
“I don’t think it occurred to me at the time but ‘909’ feels like the close on a really strange era of my life,” Ng says. “I think with a lot of the changes and fast-paced movements over the last few years, there can be a build-up of emotional energy. Not that ‘909’ was an explosion or an eruption of that — but through it I think I found a way out. A doorway. It feels fitting that it is the release to kick off whatever comes next. Some people say, ‘Start at the beginning,’ but I feel I work best starting at the end, in a weird way.”
“The video explores the idea of living peacefully with your trauma, as fragmented images from decades ago quietly seep into a woman’s daily life,” says Zhang + Knight. “Tropical moths and an 80’s estate car embed themselves deep within her consciousness. Set in the dense jungle of Northern Thailand, the endless vegetation is omnipresent and constantly weighs down upon her.”
EDEN’s first new music since “all you need is love” and “nowhere else” were released last July, “909” is the final song to be released in the era of vertigo, EDEN’s latest album, which shot to No. 1 on the iTunes Top Albums chart in 12 countries upon its release in January 2018 and has is approaching 200 million combined streams globally. EDEN is hard at work on a new body of music, which he will begin to release this fall.
