Denver singer-songwriter Kayla Marque has released a stunningly beautiful cover of Billie Eilish’s “when the party’s over.” Watch the video and listen to the cover now below.
Kayla Marque is no stranger to collaboration. The singer-songwriter has proven herself fundamental to the Denver music scene, and she hasn’t done it alone often collaborating with local musicians, nonprofits and media outlets. She continues that synergetic mindset now, having been asked by Denver’s 303 Magazine to tackle the next video in their cover challenge series. The result — an unforgettably absorbing live cover of Billie Eilish’s “when the party’s over.”
When 303 Magazine and videography partners Dead Medium reached out to Marque, they sent a list of songs to choose from. Eilish’s ballad immediately stood out as a way for the musician to step outside of her comfort zone, and idealistically, too, with something personally relatable. Marque herself is a fan of Eilish and the song, saying, “I’d love to write with her. I dig her style of writing and creative approach.”
After the selection process, Marque rehearsed her own take. By excluding the piano and layered, auto-tuned vocals in the original, Marque challenged herself by forging a fresh, even more stripped-down live take on the pop ballad. Adding to the challenge, on the day of the recording, a snowstorm struck Denver. Not even the snow could stop Marque from serenading us with her falsettos and acoustic guitar in a one-shot recording. By manifesting both the calm and the severity of the storm, Marque’s presence is masterful as she paces the pavilions of Cheesman Park. The end product proves that Marque is a powerhouse not to be ignored.
Kayla Marque is on the heels of a single release next week paired with more anticipating news on the horizon — if anything’s certain, she won’t be quiet this year. The musician is in the middle of one of many career-defining moments as 2019 continues to present her with more opportunities and milestones.
