Grief isn’t easy. The emotion is an inevitable experience for all of us, yet it’s something we all process in different ways. For singer-songwriter Kayla Marque, it’s through her music. After the recent release of an emotional Billie Eilish cover for Denver’s 303 Magazine, the singer-songwriter is continuing her fight forward with a new single — out now — and an upcoming album later this year.
Titled “Love Should Be,” the song eases into its elements, starting with Marque’s ethereal falsettos. Mixing components of vocal-driven pop, R&B and indie-electronica, the song stands on its own as a daring, genre-bending piece of original work by the musician paired with producer Glenn Sawyer (The Spot Studios). Though one of Kayla’s more positive songs, it awakened within her during a challenging time.
“I’ve really gotten acquainted with the feelings of grief and loss. I had no choice but to retreat inward,” Marque says. “The process has humbled me and given me an immense amount of gratitude. That is where the song comes from… through it all, love should be here.” From there came “Love Should Be” and the bones of a new album — two, in fact. The song is only a taste of what’s to come from Marque with the storyteller releasing a special dual album titled Brain Chemistry later this year.
