Joy Oladokun has released the video for her new single, “Sunday” today! The video, which highlights the struggles and triumphs the LGBTQ+ community experience daily, can be seen now below. Sprinkled with moving audio clips detailing real experiences the subjects of the video have had, the track carries an uplifting message of acceptance, love, hope, and equality.
Staying true to the overall message of “Sunday,” Joy assembled an all-female, LGBTQ+ production team for the creation. Joy also recently joined forces with Lucky Brand and The Giving Keys to celebrate the creation of collaborative and supportive environments. Continuing to spread her message of love and equality, Joy is set to perform at Nashville Pride on the Main Stage on June 23rd at 2pm, celebrating for the first time as an out woman.
At just 10 years old, she saw a video of Tracy Chapman singing and playing guitar, inspiring her to do the same. “Seeing a black woman playing folk music and owning it brought something to life in me.” After gaining viral traction from her song “No Turning Back,” Joy Oladokun‘s incredible voice was no longer a secret. Since then, Joy made her Bonnaroo debut earlier this month and performed at notable festivals including Threshold Festival & SoulFest in Liverpool and more. She has also recently wrapped an exciting tour with Jillian Jacqueline and shared the stage with artists such as Julien Baker, Gabe Dixon, Penny & Sparrow and more. When Joy writes and sings, you hear the voice of someone who has lived the song and is willing to re-live it again and again every time she performs it. Her two previous releases include “Blame” and “Sober.” While other artists will continue to follow the same path, Joy will create her own path by marching to the beat of her own drum and pave the way for the next generation of music.
